There are two compounding pharmacies. These are home compounding pharmacies and approved compounding pharmacies. Home compounding pharmacies include those pharmacies that do not utilize pharmaceutical agents and other chemicals in the preparation of the medicine, but are licensed by FDA (Food and Drug Administration). These pharmacies are generally considered less safe than commercially available drug preparations, but are legal and reliable. On the other hand, FDA approved compounding pharmacies are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and contain only those substances that have been deemed safe to mix with other ingredients.

FDA approved pharmaceutical compounding pharmacies must meet certain requirements. They need to abide to specific regulations such as maintaining quality control measures, use of quality standards, proper labeling, production according to approved standards, and storage of all drug products. All pharmaceutical compounding pharmacies are required to file reports with FDA regarding the manufacturing and selling of its drug products and services. Also, they must provide FDA with a complete list of microorganisms, color and density of ingredients, as well as identity of substances used.
